I was thrilled when Carmel Communications contacted me – “Will you watch and review Old Fashioned?” they asked. “A love story built on solid ground?” Sign me up! It was early this year when producer Nathan Nazario emailed me the online preview of his film. Set to release alongside 50 Shades of Grey, Old Fashioned was a refreshing bit of freedom next to its counterpart, or really any recent romantic comedy.
What happens when private, steadfast Clay meets outgoing, wandering Amber? Their opposites-attract situation is too much for them to resist, yet because of old wounds, the two approach a budding relationship intentionally and slowly. The difference in personality on screen is what will appeal to differences in personality of audience; Old Fashioned works for traditionalists as well as those with a contemporary approach because it reveals that honest love is a marriage of the two.
What’s compelling is that our leading man and lady take time to get to know each other’s minds and hearts before adding a physical quality to their connection. In this respect, Old Fashioned reveals that the whole person, not just the body, should be cherished. It’s after you learn to love the mind when loving the body is much more natural and real. Clay and Amber have a fantastic time together because their boundaries take any physical pressure off, which in turn took the pressure off of me as the viewer because I was able to delight in the sweetness, innocence and openness of their relationship.
Sweet. Innocent. Open. Not typical descriptors for a romantic movie, but oh so thrilling.
And, no spoilers here, but the peak and best part of the movie is just about the most honest, romantic scene of any movie I’ve ever watched. Goosebumps.
Old Fashioned is cute with an appealing setting, making it fun to watch. Clay’s and Amber’s respective quirks are charming; but most compelling aspect of the whole movie is that it levels the playing field with its message: No relationship has two perfect people, but the same pure bliss is available for every person out there regardless of your past.
And it’s OUT. Pick up a copy for your upcoming anniversary. Or birthday. Or just because. Experience a fresh approach to romance the Old Fashioned way.
